The Free Gaza movement is a coalition of pro-Palestinian human rights organizations, dedicated to challenging the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. In May, 2010, they launched an excursion of 8 cargo ships that were to deliver to thousands of tons of humanitarian aid to Gaza. This excursion was known as the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. On May 31st, while the ships were still in international waters, Israeli Defense Commandos boarded several of the ships and, on one of the ships, the Mavi Marmara, killed at least 9 activists.
This attack spurred protest worldwide, including here in Chicago, as in this video.
