We are a small group of participants active in the immigration reform effort, but our listserve reaches about 150 people. We participate in the efforts of groups such as Catholic Coalition for Immigration Reform, Chicago New Sanctuary Coalition, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and disseminate information and action alerts from these and other groups such as MALDEF, NIJC, NILC, NCLR, UFW, etc.
Background and History
Our initiating action was an effort to join the, then, over 200 municipalities which had passed pro-immigrant resolutions. (Despite virtually 100% endorsement by local politicos and over 200 leaders of local faith, academic and community-based organizations, the City Council failed to pass it.)
The resulting endorsement list then became the working basis of an immigrant/immigration information and action alert listserve. Individuals participate at various levels of involvement:
a. responding to action alerts which are advocacy-oriented
b. passing information from the listserve along to their own networks
c. supporting various immigration advocacy groups in Chicago such as, but not limited to, the following:
Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform
Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights
Chicago New Sanctuary Coalition
Priests for Immigration Reform
Brothers and Sisters in solidarity with immigrants
